Inspired by Others

When I attended the John Maxwell International Certification conference in 2019, I achieved one of my dreams to be a certified John Maxwell leadership Speaker, Trainer and Coach. I was so impacted by the BIGNESS of the event. Sure there were a lot of people there – HUNDREDS – from all over the world – and I made some new friends. As a result, it dawned on me that when you invest your life to make the lives of others better – that task is bigger than just you. There I was, in Orlando, FL, for almost a week, soaking all this experience in. It changed my life.

On Sunday, a church service was offered. This session was not mandatory. For those of us professing to be Christians we were so excited to hear John preach. That morning, I watched over 300 people from all over the world come to the front of that giant Marriott conference room and accept Christ Jesus as their personal savior.

It was in that moment that “Bigger Than Me” started brewing. “Life is not about the foolishness we see.” I spent a lot of money to get to this point in my professional career and up to that point it was all about the doors it could open for me. I never even considered the doors God would use me to open for others.

A Song is Born

I went back to my room that evening and the words to “Bigger Than Me” just started flowing along with some of the melody. On Christmas Day 2019 – I finalized the song while I was recovering from a cold. If someone would have told me, “Judith, if you spend several grand over 300 people will get saved.” I would have gladly whipped out my credit card.

This experience impacted me so deeply – watching this man many criticized when he walked away from ministry years ago to become a Leadership Author, Speaker, Coach, and my friend – to watch him be the catalyst that God used to lead these 300+ people in this one event to Christ. No doubt over the years he has lead thousands to the Lord across the globe! Leadership training is bigger than John and if you have read any of his 80+ books he always points back to Jesus. 

How You Invest Your Life Matters

You don’t have to be a Christian to appreciate this quote. Years prior to this event, I heard a question from Chick Shaver, “Will I invest my life in a way that when I am gone the work will continue?” How many Pastors in their ministries (that probably criticized John Maxwell) will lead 300 people to Christ in their life? How many authors will write over 80 books that help leaders thrive and serve those they lead. I know I want to be more than part of something, I want to invest my life.

When your wrapped around the axle and focused on the temporary foolishness we all see you leave no room for God to move you into the purpose He has just for you! I am being a little preachy here I know but don’t miss the point.

That point is don’t worry about what everyone else is or is not doing. When we do that we are not effective in anything and God will use someone else to do the work He has just for us. As a result we miss out on His blessing!

So for me – I am getting out of my way, I am going to do the stuff others may think is useless (color outside the lines), and be “somebody stronger this time, somebody bigger than me.”
