Backstory
Come Find Me | Story Behind the Song
From the testimony of my nephew, he asked me to write him a song after he listened to “Bigger the Me,” before it was officially released.
Come Find Me, Logan’s Song
If you have not already figured it out, I love telling people’s stories in song. Likewise I suppose it makes me a musical storyteller. Consequently, all the best songs out there either tell a story and make you feel something. To name a few of my stories in song, “Funky Animals,” “Ride,” “Freedoms Not Free,”… these are stories from real people who asked me to write their song.
Hence, several songs on the “Bigger Than Me” album are from the stories and testimonies of real people. However, this story is near and dear to my heart. As a result of listening to the single “Bigger Than Me,” it really moved my nephew Logan, who had just lost his life-long best friend to suicide, to tears. That blew me away because I was not prepared for this tough guy to have such an emotional reaction.
Logan’s Story
He asked me “Aunt Judith will you make me a song?” I said, “Sure what do you want it to say, and what are your favorite scriptures?” He sent me a text message that included the following information, his story. I used this to write the lyrics for “Come Find Me (Logan’s Song).”
“Well first my parents divorced at a young age. Then I got moved from a small town to a big city where I tried to fit in. Ended up getting in a lot of trouble from trying to fit in. Taught me how to fight. And through that fighting I got caught up in the gang life. Being in a gang I had to do way more violent activity.
I started losing friends and picked up drug habits through being involved in the gang life. It took me to lose a select few of friends to really open my eyes to my higher power as in God and to get sober. Being sober has opened my eyes a lot more to seeing bigger and better opportunities I have in life. Especially being raised in a church and knowing about God….”
Logan’s Favorite Scriptures
From the King James Version (KJV):
-
- 1 Corinthians 13:11 – “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
- Psalm 23 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
Production Notes
The Lord never ceases to amaze me. Prior to this, I created an instrumental song and held on to it for about three years. I thought a techno-instrumental release was the direction initially. The lyrics of “Come Find Me,” actually fit the music perfectly. This particular song has some unusual chords in it with the verses in a melodic minor, and the chorus in a major tonality. It is definitely the first song I have produced with crazy chords such as: Absus2, Ab6/9, and Absus2sus4. The tonality really supports the emotion and drama of the song with a vibe of mystery and darkness during the verses, and a happier instrumentation conveying hope and good in the chorus and bridge.
People’s Reaction to “Come Find Me”
The focus group that helps me by previewing the music I produce loved this song. I didn’t expect the reaction I got because the story is so personal to Logan. However, as it took these music lovers to point out, the song is very relatable to a larger audience with it’s message of encouragement. We all know someone who is trapped in the wrong life style but is crying to get out. I hope this song is indeed a message of hope for the masses and they hear the cry of God to “Come Find Me.”
