Somewhere on the Other Side is one of those songs I wish I wrote. I will never forget the first time I heard it several years ago, when I was in the middle of a very trying season. God knew it was exactly what I needed to give me encouragement. Likewise, I hope it does the same for you.
Somewhere on the Other Side | Story Behind Song
Actually, I first was captivated by Bob Carlisle’s song “Butterfly Kisses.” That album is still a favorite in my personal library. However, I wondered what else Bob had released and found an earlier album called “The Hope of a Man.” Consequently, I heard “Somewhere on the Other Side,” for the first time. It was never released for radio air play which I feel is a huge disservice to the CCM audience. I tried to locate the story behind this incredible song, yet, I have not been able to locate it.
Why I Love this Song
So let me share part of my story and why this song is so poignant to me. While in the middle of recovering from a failed relationship that wounded me deeply, this song came into my life. Furthermore, it strengthened my resolve to get my life back on track with the Lord. I was not where I should have been and worse yet, I knew better. While, each of us experience our own trauma and setbacks while navigating life, the victories become the better pieces of our stories. For me this song is part of that seasons victory. It is clearly timeless and forever relevant. Watch the video to see what I mean. The lyrics are provided at the bottom of this blog.
Not My Original
Generally I prefer not to release cover songs, or to say it another way, songs other people have published that are copy written. To explain, there are more responsibilities that come with this task to include additional cost associated with making sure one obtains the correct licensing. Furthermore, to be transparent, we get paid so little from streaming services, often it is not worth the effort for an independent musician when they can write, sing, produce, and publish their own music. Nevertheless, this song is so good, I can overlook all this. After all it is not about the money but changing lives.
Somewhere on the Other Side | Production Notes
I believe it is Divine Providence that directed me to create my rendition which I started working on in 2019. I had an artist in mind to do the lower vocals but when we tried recording the song, it just wasn’t something they felt they were vocally comfortable with. Subsequently this artist suggested I do all the vocals for this song. I didn’t really like the idea at first, I mean really, who does a duet with themself? Nevertheless, I tried it and I love the final product.
Fun Fact: I inadvertently released this song exactly 30 years after the original release on October 11, 1994.

Somewhere on the Other Side | Lyrics
Chorus:
Somewhere on the other side
There will be an answer to the hurting inside
Somewhere on the other side
Somehow I believe
That if we stand and pray and press on faithfully
On that day we will know
On the other side
Verse 1:
I could never turn
Turn back the hands of time
God only knows I’ve tried
To hold back the tide
Of tears from my eyes
‘Cause with these eyes
Verse 2:
I’ve seen my world change
Change all around me
‘Til only questions still remain
When I’m through asking why
And there seems no reply
Still I know that
Repeat Chorus:
Bridge:
On this side of heaven
God knows we’re not all that we’re supposed to be
On this side of heaven
Lord, I believe
Chorus:
Somewhere on the other side
(Somewhere, someday)
There’s going to be an answer to the hurting inside
Somewhere on the other side
(Somewhere, someway)
Lord, I believe
That if we stand and pray and press on faithfully
(And Believe)
On that day we will know
On the other side
Outro:
On that day we will know
On the other side
