Tears of the Past | Story Behind the Song

This song is born from a painful memory in my childhood. When I was very young I lost my first pet and experienced death for the first time. All these years later Tears of the Past bubbled up and provides the assurance and hope that one day death and pain will be no more.

Tears of the Past | Story Behind The Song

When I was at the innocent age of five- years-old my first pet, “Terry” a small cuddly terrier was hit by a car. I was inconsolable and found myself face-to-face with my first death. To this day I remember all the emotions I felt, betrayal confusion, bewilderment, and anger. To me this was not a natural event. The things we love shouldn’t die. It did not compute in my little brain that animals and people will all die, however this was my new reality.

The Word of God

My Mom tried everything she could to console me, she played my favorite songs on the piano, took me out to eat, took me to visit my Grandparents all to no avail. I was devastated. For some reason, I am not even sure why other than divine providence she introduced me to Revelation 21:4 where it says:

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (King James Version)

Healing my Tears of the Past

For me that verse was healing. Somehow at such a young age I got it – this world is flawed, thanks to choices my ancestors made and circumstances long beyond my control. Yet, in spite of it all, it gave me hope that one day God would make it all right and death would be no more. Oh how that motivated me to serve God way back then so I could live in a world where death is no more.

In “Tears of the Past,” You will also hear snippets of:

    • Psalm 56:8, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” (New Living Translation); and
    • Revelation 5:12, “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.” (King James Version)

Tears of the Past | Production Notes

So how did Tears of the Past emerge musically? For you creatives out there it started with a snippet of a sample I found while I was working on my album “Roar.” I really liked it and saved the sample to circle back to when the timing was right.

As I was tinkering and being the creative I am, I created the Jam Mix first. The song reminded me so much of the tunes from the early 1990’s produced by “Jimmy Jam.” I decided to go with it instead of fight the direction the production was moving. After my producer and creative daughter “Zoey the White Lioness,” listened to it she said it reminded her of Miami Vice mashed up with Janet Jackson’s “If.” It was her idea to add the guitar and make a more rockier mix.

From there I couldn’t decide which of the two I wanted to release. Then a third mix the  extended “Vice Rock Mix,” emerged. This mix is my favorite. It is just a bit longer and has the guitar solo close out the song. So I released these three mixes and included the instrumental versions which really stand on their own with a completely different vibe. Amazingly, one song turned into a five song EP and my 6th project. What a blessing!

Lyrics

Verse 1

You keep every tear I cry
Every drop
That’s ever left my eyes
Stored in Your bottle
You wrote them down
When I cross over
I will wear a crown

Chorus:

I know there’ll be
No tears in heaven
For God will wipe them all away
They are tears of the past

Verse 2

I trust the words You say
One day
You will wipe
Every tear away
No more death
Mourning, pain or crying
The former things
Have all passed away

Chorus:

I know there’ll be
No tears in heaven
(I know there’ll be no tears)
For God will wipe them all away
(for God will wipe them all away)
(repeat)
They are tears of the past

Bridge:

Going to the land
Far beyond the horizon
Pain and sorrow gone
We shall live forever
Sing a song of praise
With the angel chorus
Worthy is the Lamb
Who was slain to save us
To receive power,
Riches, wisdom, strength,
Honor, glory
and blessing!

Chorus:

I know there’ll be
No tears in heaven
(I know there’ll be no tears)
For God will wipe them all away
(for God will wipe them all away)
(repeat)

Outro:

They are tears of the past

5 Thanksgiving Leadership Lessons

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Just in case you are asking the question what do Thanksgiving and Leadership have in common, well a lot. Let me introduce you to 5 Thanksgiving leadership lessons.

Every holiday family leaders make meal decisions using leadership skills for Thanksgiving tables across the country. Mothers, Grandmothers, and Thanksgiving planners have learned many leadership lessons over the years. These superheroes who work tirelessly, on every holiday to provide a bountiful feast have navigated the waters of conflict resolution, resource management, and decision making. These are an example of leadership skills. We can learn and benefit from these family leaders based on five (5) lessons they learned which I am sharing in this blog. Consequently, they may not even realize how their leadership techniques have shaped and molded families for generations. Here are the 5 Thanksgiving Leadership Lessons you can put in your Leadership tool kit.

Lesson 1 – Make A Decision

With the various options available such as what to eat, what’s for dessert, traditional meal or something different someone will make the decision. When making decisions there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. Just like in business this can create conflict and frustration. Naturally, a leader must realistically expect different ideas and expectations. Here are some simple reminders for better decisions.

    • What is the goal or desired outcome, to illustrate, cook a Thanksgiving meal
    • Examine the options, for example, traditional or maybe Italian for the meal
    • Identify the effect of the decision, consequently one of your guest has a restricted diet that will influence the food on the final menu
    • Make the decision, finally, you made the command decision to have Italian this year for your Thanksgiving meal

Lesson learned: Identifying your business goal, considering options, challenges, and opportunities will boost your decision-making ability.

Lesson 2 – Plan Like a Pro

The best-laid plans are not always foolproof. Let me elaborate here. Say you made the decision to prepare your Italian Thanksgiving feast with Lasagna, Italian garlic bread, salad, and all the trimmings. The guest arrive, are settling in, but you are informed your Sister-in-law is newly diagnosed with Celiac Disease. She must avoid anything with wheat because of gluten. Are you prepared to have an alternative ready for her to enjoy? Doing some pre-work in your planning is beneficial to mitigate risk and plan for unforeseen circumstances.

The Mayflower Compact

A leadership example to demonstrate the importance of including external factors in your planning is the Mayflower Compact. In November of 1620, 41 men crafted a document to quiet a rebellion. Furthermore, this document established the laws the Colonists agreed to follow. Consequently, by examining civil behaviors that could pose a risk to the success of the Colony, the Mayflower Compact was crafted to provide governance to bind them together. Ultimately, the Mayflower Compact would lay the foundation for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

Lesson learned: In addition to the obvious items on a to-do list, dig deeper, come up with what-if scenarios, and ask open-ended questions to reveal and identify ways to address unexpected challenges.

Lesson 3 – Be Kind

Let us revisit the gluten sensitive Sister-in-law. While arriving and expecting to eat a good Turkey dinner she must choose how she will react when she realizes her choices are limited. Subsequently, as a leader in her family, her children are watching how she responds. Aware of the facts that 1) leadership is influence and 2) it is more effective to be kind – she thanks her host graciously. Likewise, she points out how hard her host worked to prepare such a lovely meal for the family. With reassuring kindness, she states “she will feast on salad and cranberry sauce and bask in the ambiance of being with family and making memories.” This is the side of leadership you may not find in a textbook.

Lesson Learned: A kind word in an uncomfortable situation can change the mood and provide a deeper respect for a leader because people are watching how you react.

Lesson 4 – Know Your Limits

This may be easier said than done depending on your personality. Furthermore, we may not realize we have reached the limit until that line is crossed. From the extroverted perfectionist and people-pleaser to the introvert that needs all the facts to make a decision each leaders limits are different. Consequently in business and at social gatherings often something will push us beyond our limits.

Leaders who know how to navigate these challenges don’t have a magic formula, they have “emotional intelligence” or EQ. Psychology Today defines EQ as “the ability to understand, manage, and effectively express one’s own feelings, as well as engage and navigate successfully with those of others.” Healthy ways to activate your EQ include:

    • Getting plenty of rest before a big event especially for introverts
    • Stay cool under pressure and don’t let others push your buttons
    • Get over trying to please everyone because of the fear of rejection
    • Avoid jumping to negative conclusions
    • Let go of the things not in your control

Lesson Learned: Leaders with high EQ manage their emotions when pushed past their limits.

Lesson 5 – Listen More, Talk Less

In his book, “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect,” John C. Maxwell says,

    • “High achievers listen well to everyone
    • Average achievers listen only to superiors
    • Low achievers avoid communication and rely on policy manuals…”

Incidentally, we can gather from John’s comments that there is a method to listening well. Listening more and talking less will help any leader make a connection that goes beyond words.

5 Thanksgiving Leadership LessonsLet me illustrate. Remember our gluten sensitive Thanksgiving dinner guest. Since we we keep going back her perhaps we should give her a name. She seems elegant so lets call her Elle. Now let’s give our Thanksgiving Lasagna making Sister-in-law a name as well. We will call her Narcissa.

Both of these lovely Mom’s sit on the board of a non-profit organization. In addition, they just had their quarterly board meeting 2 weeks ago. During that meeting Ellie brought up the topic of the Company’s Christmas Dinner and the need to provide options for people who have dietary restrictions. Furthermore, Ellie shared her new diagnosis and used her own story as an example and asked the Board to consider meal options for the next meeting. While Ellie was talking, Narcissa was so focused on her board updates and making sure she presented the information perfectly that she didn’t hear what Ellie shared.  Now this scenario is completely hypothetical to drive home the point of actively listening. So if your name is Ellie or Narcissa it is purely coincidental.

Lesson Learned: Leaders listen with more than their ears, they listen with their heart and mind to build a relationship built on respect and trust.

In Conclusion A Challenge

I hope you have enjoyed the lessons learned from Ellie and Narcissa. While there are challenges for all of us to overcome in this Thanksgiving season, may we find ways to intentionally be thankful for all the blessings that have come our way.

Furthermore, don’t limit your thankfulness to just Thanksgiving day. Keep the grateful momentum going. Here is a simple challenge for us, myself included. After Thanksgiving is over spend the 1st week in December being thankful for those you lead at home or at work. Here are 31 inspiring suggestions for expressing thankfulness.

Bigger Than Me | Album Release

Friends I am super excited to share the release of my 4th music project with you. These 13 original songs are born from the realization that, far too often, I get in my own way causing me to miss out on the better opportunities God has for me. Bigger Than Me | Album Release

Many times when doors do not open while we are on our journey we internalize it, get mad, or even feel like we are a failure. The truth is that door may not be what God has planned for you and your life. Sure you can try to force your way in the door, but does that ever really have a happy ending?  When the Lord opens a door for you no person, place, or thing will be able to close that door.

Bigger Than Me,” tells the story of redemption, healing, spiritual renewal, and the Greatness of God, from the stories of everyday people.

One of the things I love most about this project is it’s not just my story. Many of the songs on the project are the stories from other people’s triumphs. Take track 2 “Come Find Me (Logan’s Song)” which he asked me to write for him. Each song has a story and in the coming months I will be sharing the stories behind the songs but in the meantime, I hope “Bigger Than Me” brings joy, comfort, hope, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who take the time to listen to it. We all have a story, and though an arm of LeBaker Music focuses on Leadership, the best example I know of true servant leadership is Jesus. May this project, dedicated to Him bless your soul.

Suzanna’s Song | Story Behind Song

Judith Baker | LeBaker Music

Suzanna’s Song” is an Inspiration-Folk story based on a real-life event. Adapted from the Stephen Foster song “Ole Susanna” this song celebrates the triumph that could have been a tragedy without God’s intervention and the prayers of many. Enjoy this heartfelt rendition of Suzanna’s Song | Story Behind Song

Story Behind Song

The inspiration for “Suzanna’s Song” if based on a true event. Suzanna is the daughter of Steve and Stefanie Coburn Fuller. Stefanie is featured on “Our Song.” You could say Suzanna is the reason Stefanie and I are sisters in ministry and life for that matter. When Stefanie was expecting, she had unplanned complications.

Obedience Leads to a Life Long – Very Special Friendship

Stefanie and Suzanna

The Lord compelled me to go and visit her while she was in the hospital. I didn’t know Stefanie yet. I even wondered how God needed me to visit because Stefanie was already surrounded with family and friends. But as I say “God had a plan.” I was obedient and my life will never be the same. The Lord blessed me with a wonderful friend.

Forty days later Suzanna was born. Yes, she was premature, tiny, and fragile but she was healthy and God was faithful! I know it’s not my story but as a tribute to a God that “Still Makes a Way” and to other parents that have had rough times “Suzanna’s Song” was born. God still performs miracles and He is truly with us every step of the way.

 Lyrics

(Verse 1)
Lying here, wondering will,
I ever see you smile.
Will you make it just one more day?
Jesus please be with this child.

Will you laugh?
Will you play?
Will you last just one more day?
Lord please be near us in this hour,
As I lie, alone and wait.

(Chorus)
Oh Suzanna, please be strong with me.
I praise the Lord with all my soul,
Keep me near my God to thee.

(Verse 2)
There’s a hope inside
Of me each day,
As I wake once more to wait.
Lord, I can’t help but to be so scared,
What decisions must I make?

Will she hear?
Can she cry?
Lord please just give us more time.
And I wonder more yet wonder still,
As forty days go by.

(Bridge)
And then I saw you –
For the first time Suzanna!
I will shout out Hallelujahs!
Glory forever!

Yes! Lord you are so real to me!
How great you are,
Keeping us,
In our time of need!

(Chorus)
Oh Suzanna, I’m so glad for thee.
I Praise the Lord with all my heart!
I can bounce you on my knee.

(End Tag)
Yes, I praise the Lord with all my soul.
My God! How great – You
How great You are!

Our Song | Story Behind Song

Judith Baker | LeBaker Music

This song is an Inspirational Soprano Duet. Written by James and Judith Baker specifically for Judith and the talented Soprano Stephanie Coburn Fuller. Enjoy Our Song | Story Behind Song

The song is the last track featured on Judith’s album In Spirit and Truth, This beautiful baroque feeling song is real, raw, emotional and for those who love the high notes high starting out in the key of E flat. Stefanie and Judith trade off nailing those high Soprano notes. Can you tell who is singing what?

Story Behind Song

Judith, Doug and Stefanie recording day 2005

What can I say about Stefanie! Where do I start? I wanted to use a song that we have done several times but I felt that God had a plan for this CD and had His own songs He wanted laid on the tracks. I asked the Lord to give us a song and to my surprise my fabulous husband co-wrote it with me.

Drawing lyrics from the Bible identifying God as “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, I wanted a song that gave God Praise and Thanks for all He has done in my life. Consequently, completing the very last song on the project, my 2nd album, but 1st album of all original, phew, a life long dream is now completed.

I took Stefanie to the studio and check this out – we all know “7” is God’s number for completion. Consequently, this project is finished! This amazing duet is the last track, the last song written, and the last track to be recorded. When I arrived to pick up Stefanie my speedometer was on all 7’s! It was a confirmation for me that this project had God’s blessing as we neared completion. God speaks to us in so many ways if we just pay attention.

Production Notes

We got to the studio and she vocals blending beautifully. The song superseded my expectations. The first time I heard it I cried because I was so humbled at what God had done. To hear Stefanie’s angelic voice blending with mine it was a dream come true. Stefanie asked, “Was it that bad?” Doug laughed because he knew what was going on. This song is such a blessing to me, I still cry when I have a quiet moment to listen to it and meditate on the fact that I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for God and His mercy. All the Glory belongs to Him.

Let me take a moment and share why I choose Doug to produce the music on In Spirit and Truth. We met in college back in the day as they say. Doug was writing original music and completing arrangements for our college performances so I knew he was very talented. Further, I knew we could work together and create something amazing to the Glory of God. To put it another way Doug could put into music what I heard in my head. They only person I have been able to work with who can do this better is me, but I am not a producer. At least not yet, my husband keeps encouraging me to learn the craft. Who knows I just may produce my next album.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
I don’t know how I’ve come this far but it’s only by Your grace.
I can’t believe here’s another day I’m alive to bring You praise,
So with our hands and hearts held high,
You are my strength and my might.
You calm the storm and raging sea.
You did that for me, for me,
For someone like me.

(Chorus)
It’s not our song because it’s Your song.
All the Glory belongs to You!
You made a sacrifice and laid down Your life.
Something no one else could do.
You are Almighty One, Savior and Friend, Savior and Friend
Blessed One who took our sins.
You are King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s,
This is our song.

(Verse 2)
I wandered through a vast wasteland to find You there all along.
I cried to You in troubled times and You only made me strong.
We see Your works and wondrous deeds,
We exalt You Lord on High!
You have every part of me,
Every deepest part of me, of me,
Of someone like me.

(Bridge)
We offer up this song to You, it’s the least we can do.
You are Abba Father glorious Lord, Its You we adore.
We give You thanks, we give You praise!
Forever (Forever) and ever (and ever)
And ever (Praise You Lord)
And ever (Hallelujah!)
(dovetails into key change)

(Chorus)
Repeat Chorus

(End Tag)
You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords
The Bles-sed One
This is our song! Our Song!

Mama’s Song (Judith’s Lullaby) | Story Behind Song

Judith Baker | LeBaker Music

An Inspirational, Folk-type, Americana lullaby Judith wrote for her children when they were toddlers. She used to sing the chorus to them at night. The prayer featured in the song is the prayer they would say together. This song is a favorite with Moms and Kids. Enjoy Mama’s Song (Judith’s Lullaby) | Story Behind Song

Story Behind Song

Listen on Spotify

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Bob Carlisle’s song “Butterfly Kisses.” Don’t ever ask me to sing it because I have a hard time getting through the song without tearing up. I though, “What a great song!” Then I had an idea, why not use the talent God gives us to leave something unique and memorable behind for your children, and their children, and so on. I was inspired and wrote “Judith’s Lullaby.” I wanted a simple song for my children to remember their ole mom by.

Precious Moments

Cute Toddlers Zoey & Sergio

My daughter Zoey was three and couldn’t say “Judith’s Lullaby.”  My son was just a toddler. Zoey simplified it and referred to the song as “Mama’s Song.”  So, it became “Mama’s Song (Judith’s Lullaby).”

At night she would grin and say “Sing Mama’s Song.” Those were such precious times. I am so grateful, now that they are all grown up that I listened to the nudge from God to write this song. “Mama’s Song,” is one of my favorites.

Production Notes

Singing “Mama’s Song (Judith’s Lullaby)” at Levi’s baby Dedication, Battle Creek, MI

I recorded Zoey praying on a cassette tape, not knowing when or how I would ever be able to afford producing the song or an album for that matter.

By the time I was able to record this song my Zoey is a pre-teen. She was so embarrassed by her little prayer and wanted nothing to do with singing on the song. I thank God He gave me the insight to record her praying years ago. I insisted the prayer be included in the song even though the tape had warped over the years. My producer and I struggled to clean it up the best we could.

The best treat is my very own son, who is now an uber, sanguine, extroverted, comedian and actor, sings the child’s voice on the track.  He was still young enough that mom couldn’t embarrass him. To God be the Glory! I am so grateful for my Zoey and Sergio John! Years later I would sing this at my nephew Levi’s baby dedication. A great song is always timeless!

Lyrics

(Intro – child sings)
Sing me a lullaby, mommy, sing me a lullaby.
Tell me that when I’m sleep,
God will keep me safe and warm tonight.
Please mommy sing me a lullaby,
Sing me a lullaby,
Mommy now I can sleep tonight.

(Verse 1)
How can I sing, to a child so sweet and dear?
What do I tell them when this world is so unclear?
How do I ease their pain at times that’s hard to do?
Yet my child, my sweet child I’ll find a song to sing to you.

(Chorus)
And I’ll sing you a lullaby, to help you sleep tonight,
I’ll tell you that when your sleep,
God will keep you safe and warm tonight.
Always remember that, I do love you!
Believe in the Lord for He will pull you through.

(Verse 2)
As you grow each day, growing as we must do,
Learn to lean on God, have faith and trust Him too.
Remember His sacrifice; He made for me and you.
Trust Him, believe Him, and He’ll take care of you.

(Chorus)
And I’ll sing you a lullaby, to help you sleep tonight,
I’ll tell you that when your sleep,
God will keep you safe and warm tonight.
Always remember that, I do love you!
Believe in the Lord for He will pull you through.

(Bridge with Descant)
Sing me a lullaby, mommy, sing me a lullaby.
Tell me that when I’m sleep,
God will keep me safe and warm tonight.
Please mommy sing me a lullaby,
Sing me a lullaby,
Mommy now I can sleep tonight

(Child’s Prayer)
Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake.
I pray the Lord my soul to take,
God bless all the Mommies and Daddies
And Grandmas and Grandpas
And Brothers and Sisters
In Jesus Name, Amen

(Closing Chorus)
Lord give me a lullaby, give me a lullaby.
Tell me that when their sleep,
You will keep them safe and in your sight.
Oh how I know that Your love is true.
Thank you my Lord, I put my trust in you.

(End Tag)
Spoken) Lord give me a lullaby
Uh Hmmm….a lullaby.
(Spoken by child) Goodnight mommy)

Mama’s Song (Judith’s Lullaby) | Story Behind Song

In Spirit and Truth | Story Behind Song

Judith Baker | LeBaker Music

Inspired from a challenge here is the In Spirit and Truth | Story Behind Song. While I was a Choir member and attended Boise First Church of the Nazarene, in Boise, Idaho. Our Music Minister, Royce Mitchell (Liberty Quartet Founder) challenged each of us as choir members. He shared John 4:23-24.

Royce impressed upon me that our job is worshiping with everything we have, not just showing up and going through the motions of being in a choir or on a praise team. Every choir member adds to worship and every choir member is a worship leader.

Can you Find Judith?

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (King James Version).

Worship or Going Thru the Motions

It’s no secret I have been a singer all my life. According to my mother, I performed professionally at the ripe old age of four. At the age of 33, I believe the Lord called me to use my gifts and talents to serve Him. Largely, that is how the music for his project was born. I began writing songs for the Lord that are now on this project. I continue to have a burning desire to honor the Lord in this manner. Consequently, this is more than an “x” in a box, or crossing off an item from my to-do list. To put it another way, Worship is now a way of life, a lifestyle for me. All thanks to Royce and this challenge. I have never looked at how I worship the Lord the same.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
But an hour is coming and now is
When the true worshipers shall worship the Father
In Spirit and Truth
For such people the Father seeks
To be His worshipers
God is Spirit and those who worship Him
Must worship in Spirit and Truth

(Chorus)
In Spirit and Truth
In Spirit and Truth
For we must worship In Spirit and Truth

(Repeat Verse and Chorus)

(Bridge)
God is Spirit and I will worship Him
I will worship in Spirit and Truth

(Chorus)
Repeat Chorus

(End Tag)
(Spoken)We must worship Him
In Spirit and Truth

(Outro)
In Spirit and Truth
In Spirit and Truth
